Quadratic Functions Practice

If you have 156 feet of fencing, and you'd like to enclose a rectangular area by creating a rectangle using an existing building as the third side, find BOTH the width that maximizes the area, and that area. Provide appropriate units, SHOW ALL WORK, and when finished, draw a flower in the bottom left corner of the work you hand me personally.

Research Project

Most people read the title of this thread, and think, "...yuck, blah, blah, blah....I don't wanna, etc....." What would it take for you to WANT TO do a math research project? Can you think of reasons (other than marks) to motivate 11th grade students to WANT TO participate in such an endeavour? What would it look like? What are reasonable time-lines? What value should it have within your course evaluation?

Your chance for input exists pretty much exclusively in the comments you choose to leave. If you have no opinion, you can't complain about what is decided without you....

December 14th

11. A football that is kicked for a field goal flies in a path described by the equation y = 4x/ 3 - x with interger 2/ 90.

The ball is kicked from the 35 yard line. In this equation, the height of the ball is y, and x is the horizontal distance (in feet) from the kicker. Round all answers to the nearest foot.

a) What is the maximum height of the football?
b) How far (horizontally) will the ball fly before it hits the ground?
c) Will the ball clear the crossbar? The crossbar is 10 feet above the playing surface.
d) How far will the ball be above/ below the crossbar?

10. A ball is thrown vertically (with a pitching machine) at an initial speed of 100 miles per hour (that is about 160 km/h) The high, H, of the ball at any time, t, is given by the function\
h=147 -16t^2 , where the height is measured in feet and the time in seconds
a) Find the maximum height that the ball will fly.
b)When does the ball reach the maximum height?
c)When does the ball hit the ground?
d)What is the height of the ball one second after being thrown?

Vertex - The lowest(or highest) point of a parabola
Axis of Symmetry - The graph of a quadratic function is symmetric with respect to a vertical line containing the vertex. This line is called the axis of symmetry.
Parabola - The graph of a quadratic function f(x) = ax+ bx + c is called a parabola
If a > 0, the parabola opens upward; if a is less that 0, the parabola opens downward.

Domain - The x values

Range - The y values

Linear Programming Nov 22th

start memorising: greater then, less then, have a non filled in circle; greater to or equal to, less then or equal to, have a filled in circle.

IMPORTANT
 - x or a divide sign by a negative in an inequality switch the inequality symbol direction

instruction for today
*TEST the origin!
( 0,0) owl:)

using your calculator
-start with storing Y and X in your calculator using the STO button right above the on button,
then ALPHA X, Y to store,
- you type your equation in y is greater to less then (1/2) X+2, enter

Assignment is pending doesn't know when it will be due, but just keep it safe for when he asks for it!
PS: it would be best advised to have graphing paper and a graphing calculator
